Nitrite in water is caused by the decomposition of organic matter. Nitrite is absorbed into aquatic animals through the gills and reacts with hemoglobin in the blood, preventing oxygen transfer. This causes brown blood disease and can lead to the death of aquatic animals. If the measured nitrite value exceeds 0.5 mg/litre, it is considered to be at a fairly dangerous level.
